What To Do If You Notice These Signs
These are among the most problematic ants in Ontario. They build their colonies in damp or decaying wood, and their activity can cause significant structural damage to homes as their name suggests. Carpenter ants are large, ranging from 6 to 19 millimetres (1.2 cm on average), and in Ontario are completely black in colour. Their colonies are often found in wooden structures, including walls and floors. The colonies consist of worker ants and a queen, and the colonies usually become active at night.
Typically brownish black in colour, and ranging from 2.5 to 4 millimetres in length, pavement ants are known for nesting in cracks in pavements, driveways,concrete, walls, patios, underneath floors, and sidewalks. They are common around outdoor areas but can invade homes in search of food. Their colonies can be quite large, with multiple queens and thousands of ants. The body of pavement ants is distinguished by the two spines found at the end of theory thorax.
Named for the unpleasant smell they emit when crushed, odorous house ants are small, ranging from 1.5 to 3 millimetres in length. They are brown or black and are known for their sweet tooth. These ants build nests almost anywhere, but are commonly found under stones, mulch, logs, debris, and colonies can be found inside homes within walls, window frames, and insulation in the walls. They can quickly become a nuisance if not addressed promptly, especially because of their foul odour.
These ants are small, ranging in colour from yellowish brown to light brown to light red, these ants have a small size of about 2 millimetres. Pharaoh ants are notorious for their ability to spread diseases. They prefer warm and humid environments like bathrooms and kitchens, and they often nest in hidden areas like spacing in the walls, behind appliances, and in cracks of the structure of a home like the foundation. Their colonies can be extensive, growing large in size to multiple nests, making these ants challenging to control.
These small, light to dark brown ants measure from 2.2 to 2.8 millimetres in length. They form large colonies and are known for their aggressive foraging behaviour.Argentine ants prefer to live outside, however, they are known to invade homes when foraging for foods, leading to large colonies. Argentine ants are highly adaptable and will invade your home through openings if they need food. Argentine ant colonies are known to house hundreds of queen and millions of ants, covering entire city blocks in past findings. These types of ant infestations are thus the most problematic, and it is important you take immediate action if you see signs of these ants invading your home/business.
Thief Ants are among the smallest household ants in Ontario. They range in size from 1.5 to 2.2 mm in length, and get their name because they will nest close to and sometimes inside the colonies of other ants. These ants can range in colour from dark brown to a pale yellow.
